Polki Mogappu

This is actually my first attempt with Mogappu though I posted the Temple Jewellery Mogappu of Ambal much earlier.

This Mogappu is Polki type with White, Green and Red Stones.  I used this along with Red and Green Calcite Beads along with few Menakari Beads.

My Sister-in-law fell in love with this and I gifted it to her for her birthday.  When she wore this at the time of Navarathri it won many hearts. Hearing this I was elated.

Easy to make Felt Jewellery Pouches

Today let me share with you all the Jewellery Pouches that I had made few years ago.

In the year 2010 at the time of Navarathri, I wanted to make something special for the 9 Kanyas.
The Jewellery Sets comprising of Necklace and Earrings were already made in 9 different colours and the only thing left out was a proper case.

I had been wanting to make handmade pouches for a long long time with the Felt Cloth I had.
I was short of few colours and therefore firstly went and purchased them.  I then sat and started sewing them.  I used Button Hole Stitch to join the edges.  I left an opening on one side from where I gathered a bit on each side and fixed Zari Rope/Satin Ribbons with Beads at the tip so that one can tie them around after filling the pouch.

Lastly I embellished them with Zari Patches, Kundan Stones, Sequins etc.

The children (Kanyas) were so thrilled on receiving their matching jewellery in matching pouches !!

Take a look at my work please and share your feedbacks,,,,,

2 in 1 Patch Work Bag.........fully hand stitched !!

I have to bore you all with the story of how I ended up making this ''Patch Work Bag'' !!

In 2005, I had an opportunity to visit Zanzibar for three whole months.  I had carried my regular hand bag that was small enough to hold a ''weighing machine''.  Whenever I needed to go out of the room where I stayed in the Resort I was forced to carry this Huge Key (a foot ruler size, weighing 3 kgs atleast !!) and if it was night time...........a Torch too !!  The first couple of days I carried my ''small'' handbag everywhere and people gave me this curious and strange look (maybe I felt that way !!).

Fortunately, I had carried a lot of craft materials with me.......cloth bits, embroidery threads, embellishments, keep my crafty mind active.

I must mention here that I was working on a Quilt at that time and my better half thought I was once again back to my left over work.........but NO........I decided to do this new project.......a ''Patch Work Bag'' to carry my sweet nothings, etc...

I gathered all the bits and pieces of cloth and using ''Back Stitch'' joined all of them and made 2 square pieces.  My husband suggested that rather than a ''Square'' I should go in for a ''Pentagon'' !!

So with scissors in my hands, I turned the Square into a Pentagon shape and stitched a ''Reversible 2 in 1 Patch Bag''.

I am herewith posting the picture of both sides of the bag.

I must mention here that I received the First Prize from the Prestigious Indus Ladies. Com Contest !!!
Thank you Indus Ladies !!

Await your valuable feedbacks........

OHP Alpana...Floor Jewel !!

OHP Alpana as this craft work of mine is called is nothing but working on OHP sheet with Kundan Stones, Sequins, Glitter Glue etc.

These are pretty simple and easy to make and I gave it a try too !!  These can be carried and placed anywhere be it floor or table or anything for that matter.

On an OHP sheet I just stuck the centre of my proposed design with a huge Kundan Stone and started decorating the sides with my own choice of Stones.

Finally I cut the shape that I acquired and the result is here for your eyes only,,,,,,,

PS: Thanks to the Creator (Internet) from where I got this Texture Pattern.

Calendar Work....Murugan

I have always been wanting to learn the Tanjore Art Form of Painting but never got the opportunity to learn !!

I used to always wonder how to decorate my Gods pictures !!  It was at this time that I came up with the idea of enhancing Gods pictures using Zari Laces, Kundan Stones, Beads, Sequins, Glitter Glue etc.

I was eagerly waiting for my vacation to India where I was sure to collect these pictures in the form of Old Calendars (I must mention here that my parents had plenty of them !!).  At this time during one of our Friday Evening Puja Visits to our Guruji’s house I was gifted with a Balaji Picture. My Craft Mind started ticking….and when I completed the work on him during the course of that week I handed it back to my Guruji.  He was so happy receiving his Balaji back in full Splendour.  His wife requested if I could do on some more Calendars which they wanted to take back home for their new house Grahapravesh.  I was so happy and satisfied of having done a good job.

Today Murugan decided to visit you all and so here he is,,,

Ganesha Gift Bags

For Navarathri 2010, I came up with the idea of decorating Plain Paper Bags to give as Gift (Tamboolam) Bags rather than going on and on with the monotonous plastic bags (supposed to be non-ecofriendly).

Here I must Thank Rajan Sir whom I have always admired for his Free Hand Drawings of Ganesha in innumerable forms…….PRANAMS TO YOU RAJAN SIR !!

I bought some Plain Paper Bags and on the first 2 I used Rajanji’s 2 Ganesha Drawings which was my first free hand trial (!!) I drew them with Pencil first and later used Felt Pens and few Decorative Embellishments to Enhance the work !!

Here are the 2 for your eyes too,,,,,,,,,

Jute on Wood this a wall hanging ?? !!

This is another wall hanging created by me and it is very simple and easy to make… me !!

I had this small WOODEN SQUARE PIECE on which I stuck a piece of JUTE and using fabric paint BROWN I gave an even coat at the back side completely.

Now on the JUTE side, I stuck BROWN and GREEN MIRRORS on 4 corners, some clear colour KUNDAN STONES and a TERRACOTA GANESHJI in the centre.

I drilled holes on the 4 corners. The top hole became the hanger and from the remaining 3 sides, I fixed some WOODEN BEADS and a TASSLE BEAD !!

The WALL HANGING is now all complete !!

Indo-American Fusion......2

Here comes my second set of Jewellery under the Indo-American Fusion of Jewellery Materials.

These Reddish Maroon beads were sent by my sister from the US.  The Oxidised Beads are from Mumbai and so also the Clasps and Hooks.

This now occupies my niece's Jewellery Box !!

Patch Work Door Hanging

This Orange Patchwork Door Hanging is very simple and easy to create.

On a Zari Rope, I strung some Orange Wooden Beads, fixed Mirrors, some artificial Orange Roses, Readymade Patchwork piece that I had and some Bells at the bottom.  I fixed them at regular intervals giving it lots of space to dangle in the breeze !!

You must be wondering why I am so mad of ''Orange'' shades.....the reason being it is a bright and cheerful colour and the colour of our SUN God !!!

Hope you like this craft work too,,,,,,,

Sunday, June 10, 2012 Temple Jewellery ??? !!!

Surprised seeing a Mogappu in my Temple Jewellery collection ??

I wanted to do a Mogappu for the goddess and came up with this idea.

This is what I did......

I found one ''Chandraprabha'' amongst my numerous Temple Jewellery Pendants. I decided to use this as a Mogappu and on either sides I strung some Pearl Beads, Green and Red Calcite Beads and at intervals used Red and Green Menakari Stone Spacers.

Now I am very glad with the output and am eager to adorn my Ambal this year with this personalised and customised jewellery !!

Hope you all like this too !!!

Bird Hanging…A Door Hanging !!

I have always been fascinated by the craft works done by our friends from Gujarat and Rajasthan be it a Bird Hanging or a Toran !!  These are so colourful, artistic and very creative.

I used to admire the Bird Hangings whenever I visit a Handloom Fair or Exhibition and decided to attempt making them myself.  The result being this (see picture) !!

I had a lot of leftover cloth bits of various colours after finishing my ‘’Complete Hand Stitched Quilt’’ (you will soon see be presented with this !!) with which I made multi colour birds (I will share the procedure soon as another post).

This Bird Hanging now has taken a new home (my friend’s Puja Room in Bahrain).

Shanku, Chakra and Spear……..Thermocol work

My hands started twitching after seeing some craft works done on Thermocol Sheet.

Since I had already made Balaji’s Feet, I thought I would give the god his Weapons too !!!!

I went to the stationery shop one weekend and got a small Thermocol sheet of medium sized thickness.  I drew the outline of a Chakra, Shanku and a Spear on a plain white paper and traced the same on the Thermocol sheet.  With the help of paper cutter I cut the shapes nicely, stuck a self adhesive Black Felt Paper on these shapes and embellished them with Kundan Stones, Mirrors andGlitter Glue.

I became a child once again after seeing the completed work.

Hair Pins..Temple Jewellery

Let me narrate the story of these so called ‘’Hair Pins’’….it is definitely interesting when you read the complete story of its birth!!

I had these Temple Jewellery Mango shaped two holed spacers (extras from another set).  Some of them could not be used on a necklace since either the holes were closed or broken.   I was feeling bad that these beautiful things were going to be left untouched.

It was at this time I was doing some hair embellishment for the goddess that I hit upon the idea of making these ‘’Hair Pins’’ which could be used to decorate the plait at intervals and give the plait a grander look.

I used thin pliable gold metal wire that we generally use for making artificial gem trees, etc.  I inserted them into the spacers, added an extra pearl bead here and there, twisted the wire into a long pin which I lovingly call ‘’HAIR PINS’’!!

These are very simple and easy to make and when you have left over beads like these you could try making them too!!

Hope you like my recycled work,

Perumal Paadham / Balaji's Feet

The story of how I did this craft goes a long way back,,,

I was browsing the net for some pictures of Ganesha (being a big fan of him !!) and ended up getting a whole lot of designs of not only Ganeshas but also the pattern of Balaji/Perumal’s lotus feet.  I took out a print out and safe guarded it amongst my huge collection of designs.  This happened 6/7 years ago and I had completely forgotten about it.

Then of course I did the Ganesha Toran (which you must have all seen) some years after that.  In 2009,  my 2 friends who used to come home everyday one day asked me to teach them some craft since they had enough free time.

Being craft crazy, I offered to teach them something simple to create and hit on the idea of doing Perumal Paadham.  Since I usually have most of the craft materials at home and all these designs, we sat down to go about it.

This is the procedure we followed:
1                     A self adhesive black felt paper was stuck on a cardboard sheet.
2                   Traced the design on the felt paper.
3                   The glitter glue was applied on the outline.
4                   Kundan stones were stuck as jewellery and wherever else we felt it was required.

Both my friends and me were very happy with the result.

I had placed this on the golu padi during Navarathri and you can see the photos when I upload them at a later date.

Bandhani Toran

Let me begin with the story of ‘’This Bandhani Toran’’ which was completely hand stitched.

I cut the desired length of cloth and fixed the backing cloth with the same material and stuffed canvas cloth between the two.  I used satin ribbons to make the hangings with the addition of threaded ball beads, mirrors, artificial gold beads, etc. I stitched some kundan stones here and there to give the glittery look !!

For the edgings to the panels I used woollen thread which I plaited and fixed them with running stitches to give the panel an elegant look.

My sister-in-law wanted to gift her brother with a toran and she bought this from me.  There ends my story of this Toran !!
